HOLY CRAP!!!!! I have wanted to see the tour all my life and finally that day came. I must admit that recently I have taken a long hiatus from cycling due to being burnt out and fed up with the sport. But all that was forgotten today and I was blown away by what I witnessed. Just being in the presence of the tour and knowing that I would get to watch the world’s greatest riders was overwhelming. I can’t even count how many photos I captured in the 2 and a half hours we were down there but it wasn’t enough. Taking pictures of bikes, cars, riders, buses and even the adds (yes the adds were awesome they construct floats and parade down the start for the first hour with music and pretty ladies). The energy of the tour was radiant and infectious. I might even go as far as to say that it rekindled my passion for the tour. I couldn’t believe the amount of man power, time, and money that went into this whole production. This is a sport that is loved and is an honored past time for many countries…the US not being one of them. So, it goes without saying that the pushing of products and positioning for screen time is a serious business for the vendors and sponsors of this event. I can’t imagine the pressure the riders feel to perform for their sponsors who are footing these huge bills to make this production happen. It is no wonder most of them do some sort of drug enhancement (this doesn’t excuse the fact that cheating is okay, sorry one nut wonder your not off the hook…however, as Kelli sits to edit this post, she can’t help but wonder how hard it is to get a hold of such a thing…could make the alpine climbs happen with a bit less effort). Watching the tour take off was a memorable experience and one that I was all too happy to share it with Kelli. I felt she deserved seeing it more than I did after standing around and watching me race all those years. If cycling is your thing, you have to watch the tour in person so you can feel the energy. Words can’t do it. I’ll try to add some photos but may shut down the internet if I load them all.
